Tokyo, October 29, 2007-SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) today announces that together with The Coca-Cola Company (headquartered in Atlanta, U.S.A., hereinafter "Coca-Cola"), it has developed a new, non-fluorocarbon type cassette unit that employs a natural refrigerant (CO2) compressor, and includes an efficient Energy Management System, to be used for beverage coolers. SANYO will begin supplying these new cassette units to Coca-Cola in March 2008. SANYO is committed to preventing global warming and tackling environmental issues by openly employing its propriety technologies in creative ways, based on its Brand Vision 'Think GAIA'.

On this occasion, SANYO developed a compressor utilizing its technological prowess capable of utilizing a gas found everywhere in the atmosphere in nature, CO2. Together with Coca-Cola North America, a new refrigeration system incorporating this new compressor was developed. As a result, a new non-fluorocarbon cassette was developed, which realizes high efficiency and durability globally. With this cooperative effort, Coca-Cola North America will be able to start a new market of non-fluorocarbon beverage coolers.

"Coca-Cola and SANYO, by working together seamlessly as a team, have been able to co-develop a cooling cassette that combines natural refrigerants and energy-efficient technology, thereby vastly improving the environmental performance of our cooling equipment. We hope this will be seen as an important step towards the creation of a commercially viable market for climate-friendly commercial refrigeration and that a wider sector of the industry will follow our example in fighting climate change," said Mr. Salvatore Gabola, Director of Coca-Cola's Worldwide Stakeholder Relations. "SANYO's cassette will be fundamental in our commitment to have HFC-free, highly energy efficient equipment in beverage coolers worldwide. We plan to purchase many more units using this technology, as we move towards early commercial roll-out in strategic markets around the world," he added.

Mr. Akira Kan, head of SANYO's Commercial Group and a Senior Vice President of SANYO, commented, saying, "SANYO is extremely honored to be able to contribute its environmental technology in facilities through Coca-Cola, the world's largest beverage company, helping to increase the level of environmental awareness. SANYO's proprietary CO2 compressors that exert less environmental impact will certainly be a key component in the future of cold energy equipment. SANYO will continue to pursue its efforts in becoming a leading provider of Environment- and Energy-related products and services."

Main Features

1.New generation, highly efficient 'Non-fluorocarbon type cassette' with natural refrigerant for beverage coolers

Refrigerants used in compressors found in commercial air conditioning systems and cold storage equipment have traditionally had impact on both the reduction of the ozone layer as well as contributing to increased greenhouse gases. As new refrigerant technology has been developed, ozone reducing refrigerants have been taken out of use, but the addition to greenhouse gases remained. Therefore, it has been necessary to further reduce greenhouse gas contributing emissions.

In order to meet this need, the newly developed cassette for beverage coolers adopted CO2 as a refrigerant, keeping the ozone reducing coefficient to 0*2 while considerably reducing greenhouse gases*3. Since it does not use traditional types of refrigerants, the amount of CO2 expelled during the process of creating the refrigerant is reduced by approximately 96%*4.

2.Approximately 16% reduction*1 in energy consumption - on top of reductions
obtained through Energy Management System - through unique high efficiency Rotary 2-stage Compressor

Development for the new cassette met with a couple obstacles. While the CO2 refrigerant is far superior from an environmental point of view, when compared to traditional refrigerants used in the compressor's internal compression apparatus, it had two issues that needed to be resolved: 1) it increased the pressure by more than 5 times, and 2) the refrigerant, due to its natural characteristics, had lower general cooling effectiveness.

Through adopting SANYO's proprietary Rotary 2-stage Compressor technology, obstacles were overcome as the technology was able to disperse the increased pressure, making a manageable average torque possible, while simultaneously keeping the compressor both low vibration and low noise. The end result was higher efficiency in cooling and a viable compressor-refrigerant combination for the new cassette. Also, while the cassette was designed to be smaller and lighter, when comparing it to the traditional cassettes of the same size, the new cassette realizes approximately a 16% reduction*1 in energy use.

These environmental advantages and energy efficiency improvements are further enhanced by the integration of the cassette in an Energy Management System proprietary to Coca-Cola, which further improves energy efficiency by up to 35%.

3.Designed to replace traditional fluorocarbon type cassettes with non-fluorocarbon type cassette units

Commercial cooling equipment around the world typically uses hydro fluorocarbon HFC-134a as a refrigerant gas. The cassette produced by SANYO is a proprietary apparatus owned by Coca-Cola, containing the whole refrigeration system and can be easily removed from the cooler for maintenance or replacement as it matches the size and interfaces of cassettes using traditional refrigeration.*5

*1: Improvement not limited only to non-fluorocarbon effectiveness, but to improved beverage
cooler specifications overall; when compared to SANYO's prior products
*2: Comparison relative to when cofactor of 1 for ozone-depleting CFC-11
(trichlorofluoromethane) is emitted into the atmosphere
*3: Comparison based on the amount of CO2 related to creating greenhouse gases
*4: When making the refrigerant for use, amount of CO2 emitted based on Company calculations,
Compared to Company previous models
*5: Replacement should be carried out by trained professional only
