Tokyo, February 5, 2007----- SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) announced
today the successful development of a refrigeration unit that uses
the world’s first W-Multi System . The refrigeration units that
use the ‘enegreen Supermarket Showcase Refrigerating System’
will be on sale in Japan from June 2007.
By combining the ‘Consolidated Energy Saving System for Stores’,
which centrally controls the showcases used in supermarkets to display
cooled food and drink items, as well as the in-store lighting and
air conditioning equipment, this system can achieve a maximum of approximately
46% energy saving.
“This has huge implications for saving energy consumed by
refrigeration at supermarkets today, where showcase and prefabricated
refrigerating equipment accounts for approximately 40% of the total
electrical power consumed. SANYO’s ‘enegreen System’,
which can significantly reduce energy consumption, doesn’t
just offer a comfortable shopping environment for customers, but
also addresses the issue of climate change by reducing energy consumption
on the shop floor,” stated SANYO Chairperson Tomoyo Nonaka.
She added: “We are also considering expanding sales into the
global market as a next step from now, in order that SANYO can offer
the world a safe and reassuring environment based on ‘Think
GAIA’.”

This product will be displayed at the 2007 Supermarket Trade Show
at Tokyo Big Site, Japan, held between February 28 and March 2.
1This conclusion was drawn from comparing the company’s
conventional units and evaluated through the company’s
own calculating methods, as the annual electrical power consumption
through the displayed low-pressure control effect combining
the Consolidated Energy Saving System for Stores (eco-store). |

World’s first*2
W-Multi System*3 reducing annual electrical
power consumption of refrigeration units by up to 38%.*4 |
The ‘enegreen Supermarket Showcase Refrigerating
System’ was a technology SANYO developed from an air conditioning
application and is being used in the W-Multi System, which can connect
multiple showcases and refrigeration units. In conventional systems,
as the compressor, which is the central part of the refrigerating
system, is an AC constant speed type, there was no variation in capacity,
and there was the tendency to choose a larger refrigeration unit.
However with the ‘enegreen Supermarket Showcase Refrigerating
System, a structure best-suited to the premises can be built, because
it is possible to combine 5 models of refrigeration units fitted with
DC inverter compressors, which allows operation optimized for the
refrigerating capacity of the showcase, and one to two AC constant
speed compressors.
Furthermore, compared to the AC constant speed type, the DC inverter
compressor improves the efficiency of the compressor by reducing unnecessary
operation. The DC inverter is also used in the compressor cooling
fan to radiate heat, reducing the total annual electrical power by
up to about 38%. |

Halving the annual electrical power for refrigeration
units by combining with the ‘Consolidated Energy Saving System
for Stores’
|
The ‘enegreen Supermarket Showcase Refrigerating
System’, can not only reduce annual energy consumption by up
to 38% compared with conventional single refrigeration units, but
can also save as much as 46% of energy by combining in-store equipment
such as air conditioning and lighting in the ‘Consolidated Energy
Saving System for Stores’.

Furthermore, the new type showcase (T5 Florescent Lighting* ) reduces
the annual electrical power consumption compared to the conventional
type (T10 Florescent Lighting* ).
By combining various types of energy-saving devices commercialized
until now, SANYO has provided a means for reducing the energy consumption
of retail premises, restricted the amount of emissions harmful to
the environment, and thereby help supermarkets in considerably decreasing
their environmental footprint.
For example, if the ‘enegreen Supermarket Showcase Refrigerating
System’ is introduced to approximately 20,000 supermarkets (calculated
by 2,200 m² per retail premise – commercial statistical
estimates by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) the reduced
CO² emissions amounts to 1.86 million tons, or 1.4 times the
woodland area of Tokyo.

Using the ‘R410A’, a world’s
first*7 in refrigerant technology
|
The mainstream refrigerant for supermarket showcase
refrigerators is recently being replaced by ‘R404A’. SANYO
was the first in the industry to introduce ‘R410A’ which
has superior environmental features and a lower Global Warming Potential
(GWP) than ‘R404A’.
‘R410A’ is a higher quality refrigerant, with a higher
heat transmission capacity and smooth circulation, and the amount
of refrigerant used can be reduced by 21%, resulting in a thinner
pipe diameter. Therefore the system saves natural resources, as the
amount of copper needed is reduced by approximately 12%.
SANYO was able to commercialize this product by using technology developed
from its considerable expertise in the air conditioning business,
which spans from small to large-scale equipment.

Other features |
Highly fresh food through inverter control - safety
and reassurance for customers buying food
Inverter control allows the capacity to be carefully managed and also
reduces the automatic on/off switch of the refrigeration unit, thereby
ensuring temperature control and prevention of overcooling. |
| Supporting safety and peace of mind at supermarkets
through emergency back-up |
If under very rare circumstances the compressor fails, there are
multiple refrigeration units and compressors, and therefore the standard
refrigeration units or compressors provide back-up operation, and
the equipment will not stop. As operation does not cease, one can
avoid the food items spoiling in the showcase.
Furthermore, as the compressors are made to operate in rotation within
the refrigerating system, the operating time of each piece of equipment
is equalized, and the lifetime of the equipment can be extended. |
