to be Established
Shiga Plant to be Transformed into New Face of Environment,
Quality, and Customer Service |

Tokyo, January 16, 2007----SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. (SANYO) today
announced that it will rebuild part of the Shiga Plant, Japan, to
allow the production of HIT Solar Cell Modules.
SANYO will also transfer part of the functions of environmental management,
quality control, and customer satisfaction in the SANYO Group, such
as the Environmental Management Center, Product Inspection Center,
and Customer Contact Center, to another section within the Shiga Plant.
Through greater cooperation between the Environmental Management,
Product Inspection, and Customer Satisfaction, SANYO will be able
to further strengthen these functions as well as promote the “Think
GAIA” vision.
Until last year, SANYO’s Shiga Plant was used for the development
and production of washer/dryer, commercial laundry machines, and other
commercial appliances (commercial microwave ovens and electromagnetic
cookers). However, with the aim of effectively utilizing management
resources and integrating commercial products, complete control will
be transferred during the course of this fiscal year to the Tokyo
Plant, Gunma, which currently serves as the base for HVAC/R and commercial
business products.
In order to effectively utilize the Shiga Plant after the transfer
of business control to the Tokyo Plant, and along with the establishment
of the new HIT Solar Cell Module production facility at the Shiga
Plant, a new center for Environmental Management, Quality Control,
and Customer Service will be established on the same grounds as the
Shiga Plant. Through these changes, the Shiga plant will be recreated
as a face for Environmental Management, Quality Control, and Customer
Satisfaction and as a new location to promote the ‘Think GAIA’
vision. |

Currently, the production of HIT Solar Cells takes place at two
locations, namely the Nishikinohama Plant, Osaka, and Shimane SANYO
Electric Co., Ltd. Module assembly takes place in four locations,
including two locations in Japan (Nishikinohama Plant, Tokyo Plant)
and two locations overseas (Hungary Plant, Mexico Plant). As a new
base for assembling modules, approximately 2 billion yen will be invested
and operations aimed at starting by FY 2007, SANYO will construct
a new facility on the current grounds of the Shiga Plant location.
Cooperating with Seishin Research and Development Section and Nishikinohama
District’s Technological Development Section, SANYO will be
able to answer the surging demand for Solar Power Generation system.
As for the Shiga Plant, after plans to reach production output of
40 MW by FY 2007, production will be expanded further in FY 2008.
The Shiga Plant aims to become a “Zero Emissions” factory. |

In order to further upgrade the level of quality control of commodities,
SANYO will newly establish a “Product Inspection Center (tentative
name)” starting from FY 2007 which will concentrate on the inspection
of products both pre-production and post-production for compliance
and adherence to safety and quality standards. This center will not
only be used for quality control in Japan, but by ensuring complete
and thorough quality control for products that are sold overseas,
SANYO will establish a “Global Production Quality Assurance
System”.
Additionally, SANYO will establish a “Contact Center”
in the Shiga Plant to act as a service window for customers as a measure
to further improve customer service, opening in April. Through doubling
the existing staff of 100 employees, SANYO will create a system that
can timely respond to various customer enquiries.
Moreover, SANYO will transfer control of the Environmental Management
Center which performs the SANYO Group’s environmental management
functions from the Daito Plant, Osaka, to the Shiga Plant starting
in FY 2007. The establishment of the Environmental Management function
in Shiga will increase cooperation between quality control and customer
service, and will strengthen SANYO’s efforts in becoming an
“Advanced Environment and Energy Maker.” |
