| Troubled by this situation and knowing that his company could
not survive without nickel, Toshio spent hours trying to figure what to do. Suddenly
a solution presented itself. The nickel embargo was applied to nickel ingots,
not nickel ores. Knowing that the technology existed in Japan to smelt nickel,
Toshio once again petitioned the Ministry. "Why not import ore and smelt
it domestically? Whatever we can do here in Japan, without relying on foreign
countries, will be a huge help to our industry in the future." Eventually,
the government agreed. The import of ore was approved and a bill approving the
smelting of nickel was enacted. |
